Chapter Fourteen

My Toyota Corolla has bucket seats, so I pick Kate up first. No way am I risking Jack calling shotgun. Besides, I need to break the news to Kate.

“Don’t be mad,” I tell her when she settles in beside me. Probably should have started with, Hello, beautiful, but I don’t. I back out of the parking lot at Kate’s apartment building and navigate the roads toward Jack’s house.

“Why would I be mad?”

I take a quick sideways glance and see Kate looking at me, one eyebrow raised. I turn my attention back to the road and away from Kate’s penetrating eyes.

“We’re going to a nightclub in Duluth.” I pull up in front of Jack’s house.

“Really?” She smiles and then she notices I’ve parked my car. “Duluth is an hour away. What’s up?”

The knot in my stomach tightens. “The thing is, Jack’s cousin works the door at the nightclub so she’ll let us in.” I give the signature three quick taps of the horn and Jack emerges from the front door.

“You’ve got to be kidding.” Kate stares at Jack as she walks down her snowy driveway toward my car.

I reach out and hold her hand. “I wanted to take you somewhere special for our second date, Kate.”

“You mean our first date,” she corrects me, but she doesn’t pull her hand away.

“No.” I touch each ring on her fingers until she smiles and I know she’s remembering, too. “I mean our second date.”

Kate slips her hand in mine and it feels good. So good.

Until a loud rap on the window shocks Kate and she jumps, pulling her hand out of mine. Fucking Jack, telling me to open my door, flip my driver’s seat forward, and let her climb into the back. I’d let her ass freeze out there if I didn’t need her to get Kate and me into Pandora’s Box.

“Hello, ladies!” Jack says once she’s settled into the backseat. “Ready for our double date?”

Kate turns to look at the empty seat beside Jack. “I’m sorry, did you say double date?”

Jack laughs. “Oh, it will be before the night is over. I’m gonna bust open Pandora’s Box and grab the first babe to come out.”

“Pandora’s box?” Kate asks.

“That’s the name of the club,” I tell her.

Kate smiles. “I see. Are you sure that’s wise, Jack? Mythologically speaking, that is.”

Jack attempts to defend herself. “Well, yeah, why would I wait for the leftovers?”

Kate scowls. Probably at the concept that any woman could be a leftover, and I grin. Jack, who takes for granted her ability to win in any contest involving wits or words, doesn’t have the first clue she’s about to have her ass spanked, and hard.

“Because Pandora’s box contained all the evils in the world. Clearly, a misogynistic interpretation of the myth,” Kate says and I glance at Jack’s reflection in the rearview mirror. She mouths the word misogowhat? at me and I mouth back dicks over chicks. Jack winks and gives me the thumbs up.
